Huanchaco Travel Guide

Huanchaco is located 350 miles north of Lima, which is around 45 minutes by plane or 10 hours by bus and is the beach town outside of the third biggest city in Peru, Trujillo.

Trujillo has an airport which is located just a 5 minutes drive from Huanchaco and it is easy to get cheap flights there from Lima. The airport has many direct flights every day to Lima, though the only other city in Peru it has direct flights to is Cusco.

Huanchaco is famous for it’s surf and the reason that so many tourists and backpackers stop on their way north to the border of Ecuador.

If you are planning a trip to see all the ruins around Trujillo then Huanchaco is a great place to stay and you can access all the ruins easily from Huanchaco. In fact Chan Chan is half way between Huanchaco and Trujillo.

I personally love Huanchaco and it’s the place I call home when I am in Peru. I don’t surf, though next summer I am determined to give it a go. I don’t like sunbathing either, I much prefer the mountains but for some reason this place has caught my heart.

It has a charm that keeps people there and so many people like me come to Huanchaco for a few days and months later they are still trying to leave!!!

Huanchaco Accommodation

Personally I do not see why anyone coming to visit Trujillo/Huanchaco would stay in Trujillo, it is the third biggest city in Peru, meaning that is very busy, the traffic is terrible and it’s very noisy.

I am not a city girl and so for me the laid back surf vibe in Huanchaco is certainly for me and as a bonus watching the sunset’s over the sea every day never gets boring.

Huanchaco has many hostels and hotels and caters that caters for everyones needs.
