Travel Insurance for Peru

I have read many stories of people not buying travel insurance as they cannot afford to buy it, but if you can’t afford to buy travel insurance then how can you afford to travel. What happens if you have an accident or get sick, how will you pay for medical treatment??

Many people think that they are indestructible and nothing bad will happen to them, that it is money wasted, that could be spent on something else.

Personally I hope that the money I spend on travel insurance is a waste and that I don’t need to claim. Thankfully the time I broke my leg and slipped and broke my wrist just happened to be in the UK (my home country) but what if that had happened when I was abroad. How would I have afforded to have the operation on my wrist, would I have been having to beg my family for money, getting someone to set up a GofundMe page to cover the costs?

Having worked in Insurance (not travel insurance), I guess I understand the importance of having travel insurance, for me making sure I have medical cover while I am travelling is essential. I normally buy the standard cover for personal belongings as even though I can’t really afford to replace them, I could live without them and get the essentials I need to travel after a short amount of time. Hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical care I could never pay back. Read carefully before buying any cover to make sure that it covers your requirements.

I am sure we have all read the stories in the news or on facebook about people who have been injured abroad, a lot of the time through no fault of their own but who cannot afford medical treatment. Some countries will not even treat you without knowing that you have the money to pay for treatment!!

I have read comments from people saying oh I am just going on a city break, I don’t need travel insurance but any time you are out of the your own country there is a risk you could be in an accident and personally I don’t want to put my family through the anguish of having to try and find money if I need treatment when I could of spent a small amount of money and bought an insurance policy.

Most insurance companies have limits on what activities are covered while you are travelling abroad, though in some cases you can pay a higher premium to get them covered.

Some hazardous activities in Peru you need to make sure you have cover for are:

  • Ziplining
  • White Water Rafting
  • Surfing
  • Paragliding
  • Hiking – Most hiking in Peru is above 3,500 metres so you need to make sure you get cover for a higher altitude to be covered as normally the limit is between 2,500 metres and 3,000 metres on a standard policy.

If you are planning on travelling to Peru, then I personally think it’s a good idea to have travel insurance for Peru in case something goes wrong. I personally bought my travel insurance peru from World Nomads. See more information below on them and get a free quote.
